Dj Sk – Believe In Yourself And Always Stay Humble

Welcome to it. In this week’s Spot Light we feature the talented and versatile Deejay / Producer Dj Sk. As some of you, if not all of you by now know that Dj Sk is the current title holder of the Prestigious South African Masters Of Spin Deejay Competition which an annual South African Deejay and Music Production Competition. Dj Sk has been on the rise since taking that title last year and with an upcoming Debut Album. We had to sit down and take note to what this talented ‘Master Of Spin’ had to say:

Sho!Mag: Dj Sk, who is Dj Sk (Birth Name And Surname) and where are you based?

My name is Sikonkosi Ncamiso well Known as ‘Dj Sk’, I am based in Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape) at Motherwell.

Sho!Mag: The stage name “Dj Sk” where and how did that come about?

The name Dj Sk is taken from my real name which is ‘Sikonkosi’, so I took two letters from my name which would be ‘S’ from ‘Siko’ and then the ‘K’ from ‘Nkosi’. Basically, that is how I managed to come up with my stage name.

Sho!Mag: In the African House Music Scene, what part are you actually playing? Do you consider yourself a Deejay or a Producer or you can do both?

I am a Deejay, Author and Music Producer.

Sho!Mag: So what do you prefer the most? Is it deejaying or music production?

Honestly I just cannot choose between deejaying and production as I am comfortable doing both.

Sho!Mag: Dj Sk, when did you notice that you had love for House Music and what sparked that love for House Music? “Do you have any musical influences”?

I grew up listening to all music genres, it was just out of natural progression that I started having ambitions of being a Deejays. This all started way back while I was still doing my Grade 8. I have always believed that I would eventually end up being a musicians that was the case even in my childhood years. I have since grown to like, listen, play and produce more of house music than any other music genre. I grew to listening to the sounds of Dj Clock, it really inspired the way my sound is all because of the quality the guy produces. I would say Dj Kent has always been a positive influence on my deejaying career. Mainly, what inspires me the most is his technical ability. His mixing, deejaying, selection and natural track progression is just out of this world in my opinion.

Sho!Mag: Mzansi Masters of Spin. Firstly congratulations on becoming the ultimate 2016’s Master of Spin. How was the experience and how did entering come about?

Mzansi Masters if Spin was a huge opportunity for me.  Even though it was tough one, but it was sooooo worth it. I came into the competition ready and prepared to conquer. Yes, I did a lot of learning through-out the competition and yes it was fun too. The learning part was priceless for me as I learned valuable things such as time management and the ability to produce other genres of music. We were empowered through-out the completion to never ever not even once doubt out talent and ability. With that spirit, I guess it is what drove me to the end and ultimately my crowning moment within that competition.

Sho!Mag: How intense was the competition Masters of Spin as we all know, they only feature Mzansi’s Cream of the Crop when it comes to Music Production?

I think Season 3 was intense and more challenging that then previous seasons, as there were more challenges which were added to the twist. And besides that, time was always against us in the competition.

Sho!Mag: Any lessons you would say you gained from the entering the competition, besides being Mzansi’s Ultimate Master of Spin?

The most important lesson I took from the Masters Of Spin Competition was to believe in myself, be confident and to always focus on what I do best. Which is music.

Sho!Mag: Would you say entering Masters of Spin was the defining moment in your career? And if so how has it helped in growing you as a better artist or musician?

Yes, without any singe doubt, because I got the opportunity to showcase my talent on a national radio station weekly. People finally got the chance to know who and what I am made of. The completion also has had a positive influence in my brand.

Sho!Mag: Any advice on the best way to approach the Masters of Spin Competition seeing that you are 2016’s Master of Spin?

You must enter the competition with a view of learning something and taking something out of the competition. One handy advice I have for prospective entrants is to always listen to the house rules at all times.

Sho!Mag: Musically, who have you worked with so far in this musical journey?

I have had the fortune of working with the likes of Dj Fisherman, Dj Tira, Big Nuz on the hit song ‘Call Out’ which happened to do well in 2014. Also I have co-produced a song with Joocy from Afrotainment, the song is titles ‘This Day’. Recently I have worked with Demor from the group called ‘Shana’. There are a couple of features I have been part of, one which jumps out at this point is titled ‘Istimela’ with Sdudla noma1000.

Sho!Mag: Are there any current music projects you are involved with?

This year I am planning to put my full debut album out titled ‘The Strings Of Joy’. I have been working on that particular album for a period of three years now so the album is long overdue. I think this is the first time I am letting this out so it is a Sho!Mag exclusive.

Sho!Mag: When you not busy creating house beats, what do you guys get up too?

I like to relax with family and times enjoy watching Horror Movies and Animal Planet, just to take a short break in the Music Industry.

Sho!Mag: Currently what musical projects are you busy with and what can we expect form you in 2017?

I am putting my Debut Album Out this year. That is my main priority at this moment.

Sho!Mag: How would you describe the music in your current and previous projects?

I think I have grown musically with the positive influences I have around me. Also having worked with a couple of artists has improve the overall quality of my sound.

Sho!Mag: Any future or planned musical projects you are involved with, and what can we expect from you guys in the future?

More collaborations coming on my side and I am also planning to open my own Recording Company.

Sho!Mag: As an artist based in the Port Elizabeth. How is the music like that side? And if there are any challenges you face, what could be those challenges?

When you talk Port Elizabeth music you must expect killer sounds, but one of the challenge we are facing here Port Elizabeth as musicians is lack of unity. Many producers do not want to work together and I believe this issue will be sorted once I manage to start my own Recording Company.

Sho!Mag: Any career highlights that jump into mind, what have been your Career highlights so far?

I would have to say that winning the Masters Of Spin competition is one of my highlights. Also finally being able to put out my debut album would be my ultimate highlight.

Sho!Mag: Any message you might have for any Port Elizabeth or South African based musician you might have?

I would like to say to upcoming producers ‘chase that dream, focus on your work and work hard’.

Sho!Mag: Where and how can we get hold of your Music Projects?

My fans can reach me on my Facebook Page which is ‘DJSK’ and my twitter handle is @DJSK_RSA and on Instagram, one can reach me on Djsk_music.

Sho!Mag: What would be your best for any young artist who would like to see themselves being like you in years to come?
