Born in Kwa Zulu natal, Durban, Umlazi and raised in Empangeni, it was inevitable that Nontu X (real name Nontuthuko Xulu) was born for music. Her father is a professor of music himself and she spent most of her childhood performing in choirs and talent competitions.
After high school, she was accepted to Tshwane University Of Technology in 2008 where she studied Musical Theatre and obtained her degree. She went further to train in jazz and popular music at UKZN for a year. After completing her studies, she began her musical journey in the industry. After a few corporate and minor theatre endeavours, she met Demor Sikhosana in 2014 after sending her demo to him on facebook and he immediately called her to his studio to record the 2016 hit Cliché featuring Sun El Musician & Les-Ego. She also released a single with deep house producer Roque, We Would Be So Happy that same year.
Nontu X also founded her own record label Palm Drive Records where she has begun working on her first EP as a solo artist. Summer Rain is the first single off her first project which was released in last year in January and met with a tremendously positive response resulting in the song peaking at no. 4 on the Metro FM Top 40 Charts. As she prepares the release of her first music video as a solo artist for Summer Rain, she also begins the release of her next single titled Love Songs an upbeat dance track produced by Fka Mash. Nontu X is currently in studio working on her debut solo project and promises a release date soon.
