Nokuphiwa “Lizwi“ Mbatha is a South African Afro Tribal artist who draws inspiration from her unique Zulu ancestral background and infuses dance music and African acoustics into her sound. Lizwi’s passion and inspiration for music comes from listening to the likes of Busi Mhlongo and this is echoed with each string she pulls in the studio and on stage. For this self-taught guitarist, music reveals her inner self and boldness. And even though she only officially started recording music in 2012, Lizwi has performed alongside talents such as Rhythm Slaves duo & Mazwi.
Her ticket into the industry was a feature on singles with major industry underdogs like Enoo Napa, Kususa, DeMajor, Catzico and Minnie Ncwane. However, her debut solo single titled Ndiyoyika, released July 6, 2018, exposed her acoustic talent and put her in a different tier from the Afro Tribal Dance “club” music she is popularly known for. Lizwi is currently working on an EP due this year. The EP will feature the likes of Angola’s Afro Warriors, Kenya’s Saint Evo, Botswana’s Team Distant and Afrikan Roots to name a few. This EP will be an expression of her dance music and in essence, set her apart from other artists and introduce a more ancestral sound to the Global EDM scene.
In 2017 Kususa picked a remix opportunity for Traveller by Lizwi produced by DeMajor. The remix was the biggest song on their catalogue for 2017 and charted at number 53 on the Traxsource top 200 bestselling Afro House singles of 2017. Traveller was also nominated Best Remix of the Year 2017 at the Dance Music Awards South Africa. Traveller by Lizwi produced by Demajor, later scored a feature on Black Coffee’s Ibiza 17 – Appreciation Mix, Black Coffee’s Mix @ Salle Wagram for Cercle in Spain and also featured on Defected Records (UK) Ibiza 2018 VA Mixed by Sam Devine.
