Now, Francis Mercier, a Haitian-born DJ and producer based in New York, breathes new life into this iconic hit. Known for his Afro House and deep house sound, Mercier has crafted a rework that blends tradition with innovation. His Afro House rendition of Premier Gaou drops on March 15 through Spinnin’ Deep.

“I’ve loved Premier Gaou since I was young,” Mercier says. “It’s a song that unites people. Reimagining it feels like a dream come true.”

Mercier began this journey in early 2020 when he contacted Magic System and the rights holders to pitch his idea. After a year of discussions, they approved the collaboration. The result? A remix that seamlessly combines Magic System’s soulful vocals with rich tribal percussion, playful flutes, and deep basslines.

Magic System, founded in 1996 in Abidjan, have defined the Zouglou dance style and inspired countless fans worldwide. Their hits, including Momo and Premier Gaou, cemented their status as icons of African music. Members Salif “Asalfo” Traoré, Narcisse “Goude” Sadoua, Étienne “Tino” Boué Bi, and Adama “Manadja” Fanny continue to influence music with over 100 million streams globally.

Francis Mercier leads New York’s house music scene with his genre-blending tracks and electrifying performances. As co-founder of Deep Root Records, he has gained support from music legends like Tiësto and Diplo. His music regularly appears on platforms like BBC Radio 1 and Sirius XM, and he performs on prestigious stages across the globe.

Mercier explains his motivation. “This project goes beyond music. It’s about honoring an incredible track and introducing it to a new audience.”
